We have been busy working in Sioux Falls South Dakota for the last few years. Rewind to 2017 when South Dakota DOT requested bids for an upcoming project that would be the largest job in SDDOT’S history. It would also become the largest job ever bid and completed by John Riley Construction. We placed our bid in 2017 and we were awarded the job. Work started in 2018 and finished in 2020. The total bid for this job was 56 million dollars moving approximately 2.4 million yards of dirt. That’s equivalent to about 1500+ football fields covered with one foot of dirt! The goal of this project, according to Trevis Dressen of SDDOT, “was to connect everything that’s growing South and East of Sioux Falls.” We completed the last phase coming from South to North to tie into I90 of Highway 100 Veterans Parkway. Not only was this job the largest in SDDOT’s and John Riley Construction’s history, it also received a project achievement award from the ACPA (American Concrete Pipe Association). The award was for pipe designed by HDR Engineering, produced by Hancock Concrete (now known as Old Castle), & set by our employees. Fast forward a few years and we found ourselves bidding SDDOT’s second largest job in 2023. We were also awarded this job and started work in June of 2023. This was the first of four phases to completely tie in Veterans Parkway Highway 100 from I29 to 41st Street. It was finished in 2024 & consisted of moving approximately 1.4 million yards of dirt. After this completion, we placed a bid for phase 2. Our crews started working in spring of 2025. This phase will consist of moving 2 million yards of dirt to build a freeway bypass that will have 8 lanes, including turning lanes. The completion date is set for November 2026.
